Our classes are developed from proven source material from US Sailing.  Lesson plans may include US Sailing/Red Cross resources. We follow a proven formula of on-the-water training and classroom instruction, with an emphasis on safety.

Youth Sailing classes are offered to students from 8 to 18 years who are capable swimmers.
Life jackets will be worn whenever students are near the water.

Basic Learn to Sail. This class covers the basics of sailing and seamanship.

Students will learn to have a positive attitude toward sailing as well as responsibility for self, others, and equipment.  This class may be repeated

Intermediate.   Prerequisite course is Learn to Sail taken within the past year. This class focuses on improving basic skills.  Boat control is stressed, including tacking, sail trim, safety, and points of sail. Racing will be introduced along with rules of the road and sportsmanship.  Classes will utilize single-handed and double handedvsailboats .  A youth travel team is available for students who have demonstrated advanced skills and want to race at away regattas.

Instructors

Our instructors are certified to teach youth and adults basic and advanced sailing for small boats.  Either US Sailing or the American Sailing Association provides certification.  All instructors are certified in CPR and First Aid.

What to expect

CRYC provides boats, life jackets, instructors, and instructional materials. Beginning classes are taught using the following types of boats:  Precision 14, Optimist and Sunfish.  Advanced classes use Optimist, Sunfish, Laser and Club 420.

Students must be prepared to spend class time enjoying a water sport.  Students should wear sensible clothing that can get wet and shoes that offer stability and traction on a wet deck (sneakers or athletic shoes work well). These can, and will get wet. Students should also have a hat and sunscreen (SPF 15 or greater). Sunglasses are recommended. Sandals are not permitted.

Students should bring a complete change of clothing in the event of a boat capsize. Showers are available on-site. Students must be able to swim and may be asked to demonstrate this ability.

Safety

Safety on and around the water is emphasized. There will be one or more safety boats on the water with the students at all times. All students MUST wear life jackets, which are supplied by CRYC whenever they are on or near the water.
